Bio

On the banjo, fiddle, and acoustic guitar, The Blackwood Two play an engaging blend of original folk songs and traditional numbers delivered with old-time charm. Thoughtful songwriting – heavily guided by a mutual fascination of traditional music – drives the duo’s unique, yet familiar feeling sound. Warm tones and sunny melodies whisper cosmic hints from a bygone era.

Meeting over five years ago busking on the streets of Victoria, BC, the duo has been continually striving to grow and evolve as players, writers, and performers. A diverse array of inspiration combined with a love for exploring the sonic possibilties – and sometimes limitations – of being a duo shape and mould The Blackwood Two. Their music is an act of balance; delicate and explosive; new and familiar; raw and beautiful.

They’ve taken their signature style of folk music from coast to coast multiple times, including stops at festivals such as ArtsWells (Wells, BC), Winterfolk (Toronto, ON), Vancouver Island Music Festival (Courtenay, BC), the Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music (Cambridge, ON), and more.

In addition to releasing 3 EPs since 2010, all of which produced tunes that continue to enjoy rotation on college and community radio throughout the country, they just finished recording a brand new album that will be released early 2015. Recorded to 1 inch tape at the Duke of Erb recording studio in Kitchener, ON, the new record promises to be the most true representation of the duo to date. Captured with vintage gear live off the floor, including a 1947 RCA ribbon mic for shared vocals, the warm tones and live energy of the duo remains fully intact.
